Infrastructure/Facilities

Department has sufficient classrooms and most of them are equipped with multimedia projectors. Department also has its exclusive Seminar Hall and several tutorial rooms. The department has thirteen well-equipped laboratories and each lab is equipped with computers, required software, hardware, instruments, and multimedia projectors.

The Department is known for its outstanding laboratories of technological excellence - KUKA Training Centre with Basic Robotic Programming and SIMPRO Software, Siemens PLM Training Centre. The Research and Development Centre is equipped with Pin-On –Disc Wear Testing Machine, Thermal Conductivity Test Rig, Electric Oven for Heat Treatment for Alloys and Metal Matrix Composites, Metallurgical Microscope with Image Analyzing Software. Other notable resources are CNC Machine, Analysis Software for Design, Production, Composites, Fluid, and Thermal Analysis.

Department Library

The Departmental Library is well stocked with prescribed textbooks and reference books with more than 1300 books. It also provides e-resources facilities such as EDUSAT and NPTEL. National and International Conference Proceedings, Project Reports of UG and PG Course, VTU Question Papers, and IGNOU notes of UG Course are also available.

Laboratories with UPS support


This lab is to educate the students with the fundamentals of engineering drawing, like Orthographic Projections of Points, Straight Lines, and Planes, Projections of Solids, Development of Lateral Surfaces of Solids, Isometric Projection. This laboratory is equipped with 70 PCs that are installed with Solid EdgeV19 software and a projector.

In this course, students will be taught sections of Solids, Conversion of Pictorial Views into Orthographic Projections, Keys and Joints, Creation of 3D Models of Simple Mechanical Devices such as Screw Jack, Plummer Block, Machine Vice, etc.

This laboratory is equipped with 60PCs that are installed with Solid EdgeV19 software and a Projector.

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to read the drawings of various machine components and communicate effectively with different departments of the mechanical industry.

Material testing is a well-established technique used to determine the physical, mechanical, and tribological properties of materials like steel, composite materials, and ceramics.

The laboratory is equipped with Universal Testing Machine(UTM) of 20 tonnes capacity, Torsion Testing Machine, Fatigue Machine, Hardness Testing Machines (Rockwell, Brinell, and Vickers), Impact Testing Machine (Izod and Charpy), Pin on Disc Wear Testing Machine, Nondestructive Testing Machines, Metallurgical Microscope, etc.

On completion of this course, students can test the mechanical properties of the different engineering materials, identify the microstructures, and able to select the appropriate materials for the design applications.

In this laboratory, the students will learn the basics of the Measurements of Physical Quantities such as Length, Angle, Temperature, Pressure, Surface Roughness, etc.

This laboratory is equipped with several measuring devices such as Slip Gauge Set, Sine Bar, and Sine Center, Micrometer, Bevel Protractor, Gear Tooth Vernier Caliper, Mechanical Comparator, Pressure Gauge, LVDT, Load Cell, Strain Gauge, Lathe and Drill Tool Dynamometer, Thermocouple, Toolmaker’s Microscope, Profile Projector.

On completion of this laboratory, students will be able to calibrate different measuring devices and obtain the accurate value of various physical quantities.

In this laboratory, the students will learn the basics of preparing a mould cavity in the Foundry, converting circular rod into required shape without removing material in forging and joining similar metal plates in Welding.

This laboratory is equipped with Metal Moulding Boxes, UTM to determine different strengths of moulding sand, Open Hearth Furnace, and Electric Arc Welding Machine.

On completion of this laboratory, students can perform sand testing, forging operations, welding operations, and use hand tools in the foundry, forging, and welding.

A Workshop is a place for preparing a variety of precision jobs/products by using different kinds of Instruments and Hand Tools.

A Machine Shop is a place where different parts /components are prepared by removing excess material using different Machine Tools. This laboratory is equipped with Lathe, Milling Machine, Shaper Machine, Drilling Machine, and Grinding Machine.

On completion of this laboratory, students will be able to perform marking, measuring, and various metal cutting operations.

The Fluid Mechanics and Machinery Laboratory is equipped with piping systems, Orifice Meter, Venturi Meter, V-notch, Pelton Wheel, Kaplan Turbine, Francis Turbine, Single/Multistage Reciprocating Pumps, Compressors, and Air blower. In this lab, students conduct experiments related to Fluid mechanics and Fluid Machinery.

On completion of this laboratory, students can analyze different flow measurement devices and performence of hydraulic terbines, pumbs, and air blowers.

In this lab, students conduct experiments to study the fuel properties like Viscosity, Flash-Fire Point, Calorific Value, and Performance Test on Petrol and Diesel engine. The laboratory is equipped with different experimental setups to determine the fuel properties and study the performance of IC engines.

On completion of this laboratory, students can able to find the properties of different fuels, Analysing the performance of diesel and petrol engines which are widely used in Automobile, marine, and aircraft engines.

Computer-Aided Modelling and Analysis is the broad usage of computer software to aid in engineering analysis tasks. It includes Geometrical Modelling and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This laboratory is equipped with 60 PCs with the latest CAE software ALGOR used in modeling and analyzing the various mechanical components.

On completion of this laboratory, students can offer a comprehensive FEA solution for structural, dynamics, and thermal analysis using computer software.

Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) is the manufacturing approach of using computers to control the entire production process. This integration allows individual processes to exchange information with each other and initiate actions.

The laboratory is equipped with 60 Computer systems with the latest software like Edge Cam and CADEM, used in designing the various mechanical components. Also, this Laboratory is equipped with XLTURN a CNC Lathe machine that helps the students to get training on these sophisticated CNC machines. The lab has an RCS - Universal Robotic Kit with which the students can learningn to achieve perfection in the production of precision components.

The expected outcome of the Computer Integrated Manufacturing and Automation lab is that the students should be able to write CNC part programs for simulation of machining operations such as Turning, Drilling, and Milling.

The course of heat transfer laboratory throws light on the three modes of heat transfer such as Conduction, Convection, and Radiation, and Heat Transfer by Phase Change.This lab consists of an experimental setup to determine the thermal conductivity of metal rod, heat transfer through the composite wall, natural and forced convection heat transfer, transient heat conduction, heat transfer through fins under natural and forced convection conditions; Stefan-Boltzmann constant and emissivity of grey surfaces, boiling and condensation; performance test on Vapor Compression Refrigerator, Heat Exchanger, and Air Conditioning Machine.

These experiments shall pave the way for the students to understand the basic concepts of heat transfer by providing in-depth practical exposure. Also, the students will be able to develop basic skill sets to take up higher-level experimental studies in heat transfer lab.

The Mechanical Engineering Design Lab aims to design innovative mechanical components, improve design quality, shorten design time, and enhance design learning. The design laboratory is equipped with Vibration Testing Setup, Balancing of Rotating Masses Setup, Critical Speed of Rotating Shaft Equipment, Journal bearing setup, Universal Governor setup, Gyroscope, Polariscope, Strain Rosettes and many more.

In this lab, the students will be able to study the concept of various design equipment used in automobile, marine, and aircraft industries.

The R & D Centre is equipped with Pin on Disc Wear Testing Machine, Fatigue Machine, Hardness Testing Machines (Rockwell, Brinell, and Vickers), Impact testing machine (Izod and Charpy), Surface Coating Setup (Electro Plating), Metallurgical Microscope, Lathe Tool Dynamometer, Drill Tool Dynamometer and Tally Surf (Surface Roughness Measuring instrument), Heat treatment furnace, Thermal conductivity equipment to carry out research activities.

Robotics has the potential to positively transform lives and work practices, raise efficiency and safety levels, and provide enhanced levels of service. In this centre, students will undergo intensive certification training in the field of Robotics/Automation using the proprietary software SIMPRO.

This centre can impart training for students of Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science and Information Science that can help them in securing a better placement and advancement in their careers.

Product Life Cycle Management addresses the full life cycles of products, from conception until disposal. The most important starting point for PLM is the launch of the new concept above traditional cost-quality. PLM includes products of all the engineering, manufacturing, maintenance of information, and digital media store. PLM starts with the creation of a product and finishes with the re-transformation of a product. Also, this system can offer products to suit different user profiles.

In this centre, students will undergo intensive certification short term training program on Unigraphics (NX 9.0).
